“Why can’t we just go to Whole Foods instead?” my 10-year-old son asked when I told him we were going apple picking at an organic farm. “I don’t want to go. How long does it take to get there?” Requests to stay home and play Clash of Clans notwithstanding, we took the protesting boy down to Watsonville where we picked pounds of Johnny Gold, Gala, and Fuji apples. It was a beautiful, hot fall day. Suffice to say a good time was had by all and we made some delicious apple sauce, apple galette and apple crisp.
